How NOT to Return from an Exercise Break

Several sites, including this one, recommend that you take a break every 8 weeks after working out with weights. But how do you come back from that break and get back into your routine?

Does anyone suggest you just jump back in and do the same intensity as when you last left off? Definitely not.

This article will share a personal insight that I?m positive many people have faced when returning from a break or an injury. It will answer the question: how should I return to my workout after a week?s break from anything but relaxation?

Every 8 weeks I take a complete break from the weights. This allows my joints to recover, my body to heal, and gives me time to think about the next 8 weeks and my objectives. Upon returning to the gym you can take one of two approaches. Return full speed ahead, since you?ve had the rest, with the same intensity and the same weights. Or you can ease your body back into the program and reestablish the mind-to-muscle link that you have probably read about. (I suggest the second approach.)

Upon my return, I stepped up to the aerobics machine. A type of stair-master to be exact, and immediately selected level 10 out of 20. My memory recalls (if I used a journal) that I had previously been able to handle this level. By the end of the workout, I felt overworked, tired, out of breath and was at level 6. My body could handle it, but not as efficiently as it had previously. (I was not at all satisfied.)

Easing your body back into a workout for the first week allows the mind-to-muscle link to be reestablished. It further allows your body to adjust to an increased level of intensity for the upcoming months. Coming back from a break and then immediately going into an overtraining mode does not entice your body or your mind want to continue the abuse.

If given the two approaches to returning from a break, I now opt for the second approach. Easing your body back into the routine will allow for a mind-muscle-link to be reestablished and your progress wil! l most l ikely increase. Take the first week to get accustomed to your routine (60% intensity) and the next 8 weeks to accomplish your goals (100% intensity).

8 Spray Tanning Tips

With the recent surge in the popularity of tanning, many people are flocking to salons to use tanning booths or beds to build and maintain a healthy tan, but some people are still leery of the effects of ultraviolet light, and other people simply cannot afford to pay for tanning sessions.

One of the best alternatives to indoor tanning is sunless tanning, which offers a realistic looking tan from a bottle. These products come in cream, gel, or spray-on form, and there are benefits and drawbacks to each. If you choose spray-on sunless tanning, a number of things can be done to improve the results. You can have your tan sprayed on at a tanning salon, or you can apply it yourself.

Whichever option you choose, here are a few tips for spray tanning, to make sure the application goes smoothly.

1.Exfoliate - All the self-tanner in the world will do you no good if it attaches itself to dead skin that is about to come off your body! Use a loofah sponge in the bath the night before you self-tan to remove these dead skin cells.

2.Moisturize - Applying a good moisturizer a few hours before you self tan is a great way to make sure your skin is ready to accept the self-tanner.

3.Choose your clothes carefully - You should pick clothes that cover all the parts you do not wish to tan. Self-tanning nude is not recommended for newcomers, because the results can be unpredictable. Make sure you select tight fitting clothes so that the self-tanner cannot go under your sleeves. You should also choose dark colored clothes, since spray tanners will stain light clothes.

4.Use gloves - Nobody looks good with orange palms, so when you spray tanner on your hands in order to tan your face, don a pair of latex gloves to prevent stains.

5.If you are going to a tanning salon, follow the instructions! Self-tanning booths typically have a handout, so read up, and make sure you know what to do!

6.BLOT - After applying your spray tan, you will need to blot your skin with a towel to c! atch any drips.

7.Stand still - Standing still for about 30 seconds after a self-tanning booth application will ensure that your tan dries evenly. While it may take a lot longer to dry completely, the first minute or more is when you run a real risk of rubbing off the self-tanner before it has a chance to work.

8.Protect your feet - Because they typically get less sun than the rest of you, your feet are paler and may get dark faster. If you are spraying yourself, go lightly on the feet. If you are using a booth, use the paper booties (usually offered by staff) to protect your feet and apply a self-tanner later on to ensure you get the right shade.

San Diego Cosmetic Surgery Breast Augmentation & Plastic Surgeons

Breast augmentation surgery is one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures performed today. This surgery is used to enhance or alter a woman?s breasts by the use of implants. Many women choose to change the size and shape of their breasts to enhance the natural contours of their body.

There are several types of breast implants. The saline-filled implant has a silicone shell that is filled with sterile saline liquid. These implants are currently available in the United State, but future regulations may make them more available. Silicone gel implants are silicone shells filled with silicone gel. Because these types of implants are used in around 60 countries, they account for about 90% of all implant operations. String implants are a much less common type of implant. String implants are unique because they cause the breast to continue to expand after surgery. These types of implants are commonly used by women who want to have the largest breasts possible. Tissue engineered implants are a new form of implant that is currently being developed. In this type of implant, cells are taken from patients and combined with an appropriate scaffold material which produces a TEBI (tissue engineered breast implant). These are beneficial because there is no risk of leakage or rupture and can also last a lifetime.

Before a surgery your doctor will give specific guidelines and checklists on what you can eat, drink, and if you are allowed to smoke. He/she will also advise you which vitamins you should take both before and after the surgery. The surgery will generally be performed in either the doctor?s office, an outpatient facility or at a surgical center. Comeback Bench Program

For those who are not familiar with my name, I am a National Level Strongman competitor in the United States. I lift stones that weigh just under 400 pounds, flip a 900+ pound tire routinely, and lift logs overhead. I eat regular food and drink a protien powder, that's it. My strength comes from my training, and that is why you can benefit from my programs. This program and the weights used are representative of my strength several years ago. Using this and other programs, my strength has soared to new heights, and so can yours!

This is a program that I have used in the past when I haven?t been lifting for awhile and I wanted to get back in benching shape as quickly as possible. It involves heavy singles 3 or 4 times a week for as long as it works, which is usually 3 to 5 weeks. If you haven?t lifted at all for a while, you will need to get a couple of lighter bench workouts under your belt before you undertake this program. With that being said, let me take you with me through the first time I used this program and show you what I learned about it.

When I started this program, my previous best shirtless bench was 445. After taking some time off, I couldn?t get past 385 for a couple of months. I started this program planning on benching 4 or 5 times a week, or basically as often as I could without overtraining. The first day I warmed up with 135 for a few reps, then 225, 315, and 365. At that point I could feel that I was near my max for the day. Since the idea was to do multiple singles near my max, I did 385 and then a couple more singles at 365. Some days I did no assistance work at all, and others I did some tricep and bicep work. The main program is just heavy near max singles several times a week in the bench press. I repeated that workout 4 times that week and the weight seemed to feel only a little lighter by the end of the week.

When Monday rolled around I was able to do 405 for 2 singles, 385 for 2 singles, and 365 for 6 more singles. I got 405 in each of th! e 3 othe r workouts that week, but my total number of sets was more like 4 or 5 singles each workout instead of 10. I felt like I might have been able to do a little more weight on a couple of occasions, but I didn?t want to overtrain.

The next week I was surprised when I pressed 435! I mean, I know I had done 445 in the past, but I was stuck at 385 for a couple months and in only 2 full weeks of this program I was already up 50 pounds! The next day I lifted 440 and I was starting to really believe in this crazy program. I only did one more workout that week and only went up to 405 so that I would be fresh for the next Monday.

On Monday, after 3 full weeks on the program, I benched 450 pounds without any supportive equipment. That is a 5 pound all-time personal record, and 65 pounds more than the 385 I had been stuck at for 2 months! I couldn?t believe it, and I wanted to stay on this program forever. That?s when I discovered that this program was only effective for a short time.

It is very difficult for the body to deal with the stress of benching heavy 4 times a week. All of a sudden 405 seemed heavy and it was obvious to me that I had reached the point where I needed to reduce my benching to once or twice a week again. Now I know that common belief is that all programs work for a little while, but let?s face the facts: very few programs can boast even a 20 or 30 pound strength gain in a few weeks, much less 65 pounds. I also admit that it is much easier to regain strength than to gain it in the first place. My experience is that although it is easier to regain strength, it is still amazing to be able to break through a plateau and set a personal record in only 3 weeks. Especially when the 3 week increase is 65 pounds!

I am currently testing a variation of this program on a friend who is serving in the Armed Forces in the Middle East right now. I will be writing another article about what we learn, when he returns later this year.

Until the next time,

Acne Treatment Remedies for Adults and Teens

Those who have experienced pimples on their face and torso want an acne remedy that they can use and that will work. There are lots of different products you can use. Some make outrageous, miracle claims but a few of them work to reduce the symptoms and overall appearance of acne.

It can be very difficult to make the right choice of an acne product on the market today. Most people use trial and error in their choices, trying the product for a few days then giving it up and moving on to a new one when nothing happens or worse something does happen in the form of further irritation of the skin. It can be very upsetting and expensive even though this form of trial and error does occasionally give good results.

Good research can save time. Find what?s in the product and research what it does. This will help to eliminate much of the competition. There are few acne treatments with FDA approval in over-the-counter uses and they are often used in combination with other acne fighting treatments. This helps to maximize their ability to help keep acne off your face.

Many are used in different strengths or percentages in the medications. Sulfur has been used for many years as an acne treatment. It does cause drying as part of its treatment so you may need to use some skin lotion on your face. Sulfur can be combined with antibiotics and it is considered very safe and relatively inexpensive for the purchaser. However the skin can become used to the Sulfur and will no longer react to it when applied, so the treatment is ineffective.

Benzoyl peroxide common in over-the-counter treatments and is thought to be very, highly effective in the killing of the p. acnes bacteria which causes acne. It can also dry up excess oil from the pores and overuse can lead to dry and chapped skin. A mild dosage is often just as effective as the stronger one.

Lastly Salicylic acid unplugs those clogged pores by soaking into the plug and helping to loosen it up. It?s made from willow bark. Interestingly a f! orm of i t is what makes up Aspirin. Plus the acid helps to exfoliate the dead skin cells from the surface of your skin.

From Sumo To Sinatra A Gastric Bypass Surgery Success

Standing on stage at St. Bart?s Square in central London, looking out over 14,000 cheering fans, all I could think was, ?How does a guy like me get to a place like this??

It was June 2001, and I was performing alongside world-renowned artists like Tony Bennett and Paul McCartney as part of the celebration of Queen Elizabeth?s Golden Jubilee. I was undoubtedly more awestruck than any audience member at the event. I had only started singing the year before, the professional culmination of an indescribable emotional and psychological journey that started in the spring of 1997, when I underwent gastric bypass surgery.

I sported a size 40 regular canary yellow zoot suit for the Queen?s concert, strutting confidently back and forth across the stage as I sang big band classics to an audience of thousands. Five years and one month prior, those few steps would have left me gasping for air. Back then, I weighed exactly 400 pounds, and I had lost all hope. My life had become unmanageable. I checked myself into the hospital and declared ?physical bankruptcy? as I turned my body over to the experts?a team of doctors and nurses who offered me a one-time chance to start over.

Like many gastric bypass surgery patients, I had been overweight most of my life. As a child I was euphemistically called ?husky,? and I managed to use my weight to my advantage by playing football starting in the second grade. But by middle school, the coaches had to move me up a league level because I was heavier than the other children my age. In the next league, my teammates just called me fat, and I was relegated to the position of benchwarmer. I couldn?t have been more miserable.

After high school, I entered in the Navy in hopes I could see the world and all it had to offer. Not long after boot camp, I was stationed in far northern Japan as a liaison between the military police and the local Japanese law enforcement. For a bit of fun and exercise, I signed up for the base football team. Ironically, a month later th! e city m ayor and base commander were watching a game when they struck upon the wild idea of recruiting me into the sport of sumo. (You know, the fat guys in diapers?) I went to my first practice the very next day and was on the amateur sumo wrestling circuit a few weeks later, serving as a sort of goodwill ambassador to Japan while competing in cities across the country.

My salvation came one morning as I was getting ready for work. I was listening to Good Morning America on the television as I went about my usual routine, and my ears perked up as Charlie Gibson read a report about a radical new surgery for the morbidly obese. I immediately read everything I could get my hands on about this new gastric bypass technique, and I eventually qualified for the surgery after being diagnosed with sleep apnea. Three months after hearing the report on the morning news, I was admitted in the hospital having weight loss surgery.

After weight loss surgery, the weight truly just melted away. I lost nearly 200 pounds in a year?s time and could not believe the transformation I was seeing right before my own eyes as I dropped down from a waist size of 56 inches to just 34 inches. The biggest challenge during this time was not cutting back on food or increasing my physical activity, but rather the lack of mental and emotional support available to weight loss patients.

Because gastric bypass surgery was still a new procedure, there were no support groups or help centers for those of us who had undergone the treatment. The doctors were great about the mechanics of the surgery, but they had no idea what it was like inside of a brain that had just gone through such a radical change. I strongly encouraged my surgeon to set up a regular meeting for his patients, so they could share their experience and insight with one another. Today, his weekly sessions regularly draw 20 to100 pre- and post-op patients. (I also created my own website for gastric bypass patients this year and am working on a self-help book for people ! who have had the surgery.)

I came to realize that the weight was never really the problem, but rather, a symptom of other unresolved issues. Although I was grateful for the weight loss surgery and the transformation that followed, I discovered it could never be a complete solution, because it was a physical remedy applied to a mental, emotional and spiritual problem. Like taking an aspirin for the pain of a brain tumor, the gastric bypass only addressed the most superficial part of a serious illness. I was now realizing that to accurately get to the root of the problem, I had to stop focusing on my waistline, and start focusing on the gray matter between my ears. So, what did I really want? Now that the fat suit was gone, I was left with me, but I didn?t know who ?me? was.

In the four years since deciding to pursue my dreams I have performed on three continents, appeared in local and national media, and rubbed elbows with celebrities. I have established three set-ups of my 17-piece big band?one in Dallas, one in London and one in Tokyo?and recorded a critically acclaimed CD.

?How does a guy like me get to a place like this??

Craig Thompson, better known as Big T, a former sumo wrestler who used to tip the scales at 400 pounds has since reinvented himself as a singer and bandleader. As one of the earliest to have Gastric Bypass Surgery, in 1997.

Cleansing for a Busy Schedule

Why cleanse? We hear a lot of talk about it, but do we really need it? The answer to this question is easy. Look out across the city you live in. Do you see that brown/yellow haze out there? We all breathe that. And that is just the air we breathe not the chemicals in our food, water etc.

Cleansing is an important part of maintaining health, slowing the aging process and preventing diseases, by allowing the body to rid itself of a build up of toxins. There are many ways of doing this. Ideally, a person should be free of commitments during a cleanse, as much as is possible, because a relaxed person can detoxify more efficiently. Another note of caution, do not ever make yourself ?fit? into a cleanse. The cleanse should ?fit? you. Take time to experiment to see what regime will best suit your schedule, but you will need to make room for it no matter how busy you are.

A cleanse can be a fast, but it doesn?t have to be. You can eat while cleansing provided that you use cleansing foods. If you want a specific food list for cleansing check into any cleansing book and they will list the foods specifically. Generally, it is avoiding heavy foods like red meat, wheat, dairy, fried foods, Soya products, dried fruit etc. You would eat fresh fruits, fresh veggies, whole grains with the exception of wheat, some chicken or fish etc. (Some veggies contraindicated when cleansing are tomatoes, potatoes, squash family. Dried fruit is usually a no-no.) Any condiments you use would be very simple like; flax oil, olive oil, apple cider vinegar, vegetized sea salt etc.

The idea is to eat easily digestible foods so as to ?free-up? the eliminative organs; liver, kidney, skin, lungs, colon, and lymphatic system, so they can spend more time detoxifying and less time digesting. (Some of these organs aren?t directly digesting food, but do help in the processing part of digesting.) A juicer is also recommended, though a basic cleanse can be done without this. With these things in mind, let me ! run thro ugh a few ways you can accomplish this.

Plan A: Fast for ? days with fresh vegetable juices and fruit juices. Then eat lightly in the latter part of the day. I.e.: Brown rice or millet with fish or chicken and a salad. Have a variation of this for supper or have a few glasses of fresh juice from your juicer.

Plan B: Juice with veggie and fruit juices all day (take your juice 1 ? to 2 hours apart) with 4 to 6 fiber drinks ? hour between juices. A mixture of a high quality psyllium mixture and ground flax seed is excellent for cleansing. It aids the removal of toxins from the intestines. Add hydrated bentonite clay to help absorb even more toxins from your body! (1 tbsp per drink is usually enough.) A word of caution here: if you haven?t ever done a fast before do not attempt this without doing the ? day fast first. Also, for fasting; going on to the fast, and coming off the fast, must be equal to the number of days you are planning to fast. For example, if you are planning to fast for 3 days. Then you would start eating fruits, veggies with easy to digest protein like seeds, fish etc for 3 days before fasting. When you come off you must start with blended fruits, blended salads, and gradually work your way to easy-to-digest proteins, for three days at least. Coming off a cleanse is almost more important than the fast itself. It can ?make? or ?break? a fast. (Don?t do this on your own if you are on medication of any kind.)

Plan C: Use cleansing food all day without any fasting. Pick from a cleansing food list to make up your menus ahead of time. A sample menu would look like this:

Breakfast: Ground almonds, which had been soaked over night in purified water. Have with maple syrup.

Lunch: Brown rice, chicken, salad with a flax oil or olive oil dressing.

Dinner: Chicken breast, brown rice and veggies.

Plan D: Juice fast on the weekends, while eating cleansing foods during the week.

Additional aids to cleansing would be: a)Use herbs to h! elp clea n out the toxins from fatty tissues, the liver, colon, lymph, lungs, kidneys and skin. Herbs are quite necessary to really get the ?junk? out of the body.

b)Grow Wheat Grass juice and juice it. Add it to your veggie and fruit juices. It is excellent for cleansing.

c)Eat cleansing foods that are in accordance with your blood type. ?Eat Right for Your Type.? By Dr. Peter J. D?Adamo.

d)Eat cleansing foods that are in season if at all possible. And eat as organic as possible.

e)Use enemas or colonics or a combination of both to enhance the detoxifying process. Water is the best solvent known to man. It will take out of your body toxins that nothing else can.

f)Use affirmations to help you stick to a cleanse. For example, ?Hour by hour my body is purifying itself.? Or ?Every minute that I am fasting or cleansing, I am flushing dangerous poisons out of my wonderful body.?

g)Dry skin brushing morning and night using a vegetable bristle brush. Brush towards your heart. Do it lightly, this will help your lymph move along.

Combat Frizzy Hair With These Essential Tips

Frizzy hair doesn't discriminate. It plagues both the thin and thick haired alike. If your hair has even the slightest wave or curl, it's susceptible to frizz. This article details the six critical things you can do to launch a full-on assault on those unruly frizzies...along with a list of things not to do.

INTERNAL FACTORS--Our circulatory systems deliver oxygen and nutrients to hair follicles, which keeps hair growing healthy and strong. Make sure you're getting enough of the nutritional requirements for smooth, shiny locks. These include:

Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids, Evening Primrose Oil, Lecithin, Silica, Vitamin B8 (Biotin), Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid), Protein, and Water

KEEP IT COOL--I'm lumping 2 cooling techniques into one category here. Both are equally important. Coolness combats frizzies by closing down the cuticle (outer) layer of each hair strand. And of course, heat has the opposite effect, obliterating moisture and amplifying frizz. So cool your hair in these two ways:

- A cool rinse (with either just water or vinegar/water) will close down the cuticle and add shine.

- After heat styling with a blowdryer, use the cool shot button on your hair dryer to cool down the section you're working with. That will increase the curl or volume you're creating and amplify the shine!

SQUEEZE, DON'T RUB--When towel drying your hair, resist rubbing or creating any sort of friction. The best method for drying frizzy hair is to use a hand towel and squeeze the hair up from ends to roots.

KEEP IT TRIMMED--Surely you've heard it before, but it warrants repeating...regular trims prevent split ends. It's stressed so often because of the nature of splitting hairs...they continue on up the hair strand, which exacerbates the frizz. And, once the hairs have split, the only way to repair the damage is to cut the hair above the split. So if it's a bounty of smooth curls you desire, trim it up at least every two months.

PROTECT IT--Nature's elements can wreak hav! oc on fr izzy hair. Sun, wind, and environmental humidity are the main culprits. Here's what you can do to defend against the harshness of the elements.

Humidity Control--Use an anti-humectant pomade to help repel water from the atmosphere. Conversely, too arid of an environment can contribute to frizz by drying out the hair too much. In that case, use a humectant pomade. Aveda makes both...keeps the invisible forces of nature from messin' with your mane.

Sun/Wind Protection--Get yourself a stylin' straw hat, bandana, or scarf to shield your hair from the harsh effects of sun and wind. Always cover your hair in tanning beds...just wrap it in a towel. Some styling products contain SPF's, although their effectiveness is debatable.

PRODUCTS AND TREATMENTS--Product companies are clamoring for your dollars, continuously launching new improved products which promise to quell your frizzies once and for all. Here are some tips for wading through the claims and finding the right products.

Try a pre-shampooing treatment like The Strokes by LUSH Cosmetics, which sheathes your locks in all manner of goodies like beer, yeast, and olive oil. This treatment is applied before you shampoo so it keeps the cleansing agents from stripping away all the necessary oils from your hair.

Conditioning Products--If your hair is on the thick side, use conditioners formulated to smooth. They'll deposit a friendly film on the hair strands, adding weight and smoothing at the same time. On fine hair, however, the friendly film becomes more of a foe as it can add too much weight. In this case, use a daily conditioner formulated for colored hair. That'll ensure your hair gets some extra moisture, without trading frizz for flatness.

Maximize the benefits of your conditioner! Keep a dry face cloth or hand towel nearby and, after shampooing, squeeze all the excess moisture from your hair into the towel. Then apply the conditioner. It'll keep the product from becoming diluted by the water already in your hair, incre! asing it 's effectiveness.

Leave-In Conditioners--Ordinarily, the concept of applying a slimy coating on your hair may seem unappealing...when it comes to nixing the frizz, however, slime is the ticket. Not just any slime, though, try Sebastian's Potion 9 for a leave-in conditioning treatment that'll sooth your frazzled strands and offer just a touch of hold. I'm not sure how the folks at Sebastian will feel about me touting their product as a slime-fix. I really do mean it in the nicest way possible.

Styling Products--Here's the truth. There does not exist a styling product that is going to smooth/straighten your hair in the miraculous way demonstrated in the ads. Surely this is not news to you and I'm certain you've got a cupboard full of cast-away smoothers to prove it. Cream styling products help condition the hair and silicones can disguise the frizz, but both need to be used in combination with the right styling techniques.

Color Glossing--Products like Sebastian ColourShines have a sealing effect on the hair, and dramatically amplify the shine. Great for frizzy hair! If you're not looking to change the color of your hair, go for a clear gloss...same benefits, no commitment.

THINGS TO AVOID--Scan the list of Don'ts below to make sure you're not unknowingly contributing to the problem.

Fine tooth combs and brushes

Excessive heat styling

Touching hair while it's drying

High alcohol content in styling products (firm hold gels and hairsprays)

Any sort of friction on the hair

Consider yourself armed with sufficient knowledge to challenge the frizz and come out victorious. Combine all of the tips here for best results...and visit my website for detailed information on styling curly hair.

Mesothelioma and the Asbestos Time Bomb

The one-time friend turned killer that was once such an indispensible, yet unnoticed, part of our daily lives for so many centuries, is now a feared enemy. It is Asbestos (from the Greek for 'inextinguishable') and is the reason for thousands of global compensation claims by mesothelioma lawyers against employers, manufacturers and processors of asbestos-related products. Many asbestos workers, and those unwitingly exposed to asbestos, have been given a mesothelioma diagnosis for which there is no cure, maybe just a little temporary relief, until the inevitable distressing death a few months or years after diagnosis.

Mesothelioma is a time bomb because it can be that less than a day's exposure to asbestos dust is enough to produce mesothelioma, some 30-40 years later, when mesothelioma symptoms are first noticed. Though most mesothelioma victims are men, because mainly they worked in those industries, sometimes their wives and family too are innocent sufferers from this disease, inhaling the asbestos dust shaken from their husband's/fathers' clothing, or hair, at the end of the working day.

Whether the fault lies with manufacturers & employers (assuming they knew of the dangers) or the employees (did everyone diligently use respirator equipment and protective clothing, if it was supplied?), is something for the mesothelioma lawyers, insurance companies and courts to thrash out.
Meanwhile, asbestosis & mesothelioma victims are dying a painful and inexorable death, before their cases can even come to court or a settlement is reached. As there is no cure for mesothelioma or asbestosis, all that can be done is to make the sufferer's plight as comfortable as possible, before death finally brings mercyful relief. Although various governments have introduced, albeit belatedly, anti-asbestos legislation, sufferers find that in some cases the time limit for claiming compensation is unrealistically short, given the long time (30-40 years) before mesothelioma symptoms are first notic! ed. Many victims are dying before they get a court verdict, or even before they get to court. Unlike its Greek derivation, Mesothelioma and asbestosis victims are not inextinguishable.

What is Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a form of cancer in the fluid-filled sac between the Mesothelium lining the lungs, or abdominal cavity or heart, and the body. In a healthy person, the mesothelium secretes a fluid which lubricates these organs, allowing them to expand, contract and easily slide over neighbouring tissues. Fluid in excess of that required for lubrication is removed through the blood & lymph system. In a person with Mesothelioma, the asbestos fibres penetrate the organ, into the fluid sac, producing cancerous cells which attack other cells, thickening the fluid, causing pain, and difficulty with breathing. Peritoneal Mesothelioma and, less commonly, Pericardial Mesothelioma, are not as common as the pleural type, but just as deadly.

The Causes of Pleural Mesothelioma
Pleural Mesothelioma, the most common form of mesiothelioma, is caused, according to all known evidence, exclusively by inhalation of asbestos fibres. These fibres are very thin & sharp enough to penetrate the lining of the lung, entering the plural sac, thereby damaging the mesothelium cells. Often, cancerous growth results, as described above. Other factors also come into play, including the changes induced in macrophages by their ingestion of asbestos particles. The asbestos seems to stimulate the macrophage to produce free radicals, which then affect DNA to induce cancerous cell behaviour. The chances of a person in an asbestos-related environment developing lung cancer, are said to be about 50 times increased if that person smokes, though there is no evidence to show that smoking itself causes mesothelioma. Ironically, one brand of cigarettes in the 1950's used asbestos in the filter tips.

There are other factors too that can play a part, such as heredity, general health and diet. Although not too much has been! clincia lly proven about these factors, as with all diseases, the better the person's health the better their chances of not catching a disease.

The History of Asbestos. It is probably not generally known that asbestos has been around since 4000 BC, when it was used in lamp wicks and candles. Interestingly, it was also used in the cloth wrapping of Egyptian mummies. Maybe this is the real origin of 'The Curse of The Mummy' stories; grave robbers, and maybe Egyptologists, could expect to get their just desserts! Clothing made from asbestos was highly prized in ancient times to wrap the bodies of Kings, so that their ashes would not mix with the earth or other contaminants during cremation, and it is said the Romans simply threw their asbestos napkins into a fire to cleanse and purify them.

Asbestos, a type of silica, is mined from three main types of metamorphic rock:- Chrysotile (white asbestos), Amosite (brown asbestos) and Crocodilite (blue asbestos). Other asbestos bearing rocks such as Tremolite, Anthophyllite and Actinolite are not in such common use but could still be found in some construction work, talcum powders and vermiculite. During the Middle Ages there does not appear to be much evidence of asbestos use; they probably had other problems, like recurring plagues and crusades, to contend with.

The fact that asbestos workers developed respiratory illnesses, and died young, was known as far back as Roman times when Pliny the Elder commented that asbestos workers seemed to have many health problems, advising against buying asbestos-workings slaves as they died young. Obviously, there were no mesothelioma lawyers around then! The deleterious effects of asbestos, in modern industrial times, have been recorded as far back as the start of the 18th Century but little notice was paid by factory owners & Governments to the plight of asbestos workers - labour was cheap and life even cheaper; nothing should stand in the way of the sacred cows of Industrial Progress and the profits of ! industri alists and politicians.

That it took until the 1970s before more stricter legislation to restrict its use and safeguarded workers was drawn up, is scandalous. A charitable reason for this inertia may be that asbestos had become so widely used in almost every aspect of our everyday lives, delivering such tremendous benefits, that there was such a reluctance to finally admit that something so useful could also be so deadly. People who have expounded the virtues, and made a lot of money out of, asbestos are hardly likely to suddenly throw up their hands and admit to being wrong. The alternative, less charitable, explanation can only be that greed and profit were more important than employees' health.
Deja vu!

There are many ex-asbestos industry workers who are living time bombs, not knowing if the deadly fibres have affected their health. As employers & governments have reluctantly been forced to legislate to compensate workers with Mesothelioma, there needs to be greater awareness of sufferers plight.

Is Electrolysis Hair Removal is for You?

If you have an issue with unwanted hair, you have probably tried the traditional methods that promise results, but may have left you feeling as if you were held hostage by the time needed to stay hair free. If this sounds like your situation, you may be interested in trying electrolysis hair removal as a permanent form of hair removal.

While the electrolysis hair removal method is considered permanent, this does not happen in the first visit. In fact, it can take a large amount of treatments before an area is considered to be free of hair. One reason for this is that hair follicles grow at different times; therefore, some of the follicles will be dormant and are not treated.

It is important to note that while an increasing number or do-it-yourself electrolysis systems are on the market; this is not a good idea, particularly when facial hair needs to be removed. This is because the home systems use a lesser amount of voltage, therefore allowing a greater number of hair follicles to survive and re-grow. Removing hair on the face requires a mirror, which can distort vision and lead to problems.

While electrolysis can be a painful procedure to endure, the use of a pain relieving cream can lessen or eliminate the pain. The reason for the pain is that a thin wire is placed directly on the hair follicle itself and electricity is passed through, therefore effectively destroying the root.

The method of hair removal known as electrolysis began in 1875 when a doctor named Charles E. Michel started to remove ingrown eyelashes with an electric current and a very fine wire. Since that time, electrolysis is the only proven form for the permanent removal of unwanted hair.

How To Get Rid of Back Fat

When it comes to back fat what you can't see will make a difference. Who's going to slip into a bikini or wear a body-hugging outfit when rolls of back fat cascade over the straps?

How do most of us reach that point, where we've overwhelmed our body's ability to limit body fat accumulation? Our convenience culture, gadget rich and free-time-poor sets us up for diets and lifestyle that do everything to retard our body image goals. Lacking time away from family and work responsibilities, we can't stop the slippery-slope-slide of our bodies into middle-aged doughboy shape. Result? We wake up to find ourselves slowing down, sporting saddle bag hips, a big stomach, hand-grip love handles, sagging loose skin, rolls and mounds of back fat to add to our rapidly expanding pear shape body.

Get Rid of Fat On Lower Back. People investigating appearance changes and body contouring options typically reveal a fat tummy which spread body fat gains around their trunk, adding inner thigh fat, breast fat and of course layers of back fat. Treating back fat alone, without addressing neighboring fat deposits is the body sculpting equivalent of driving with half an engine.

* Setting Achievable Body Contouring Goals. First thing to do is to establish clear realistic body shaping goals. Your pear shape body didn't happen overnight, so you'll want to manage the change process carefully with an eye on not just body shape results but also on health risks and costs.

* How Liposuction Offers Safe Quick Way To Get Rid Of Fat On Lower Back. Liposuction performed by a board certified surgeon has become the gold standard for back fat reduction. Tried and proven, with hundreds of thousands of satisfied patients, liposuction can scoop out up to 8 to 10 pounds of pure fat from a treatment site in a single session in less than two hours. Yes, there's a recovery time, perhaps some down time away from work, but you're getting the ultimate in convenient quick-fixes for your back fat woes.

* How To Lose Back Fat ! With Non Surgical Treatments. Surgery is serious stuff, and where possible should be avoided. Biggest growth trend in body enhancement and cosmetic body shaping is in the area of non surgical treatments for reducing back fat. Some high tech options have slipped into the consumer's choice-bag, including radio frequency and ultrasound devices, which beam controlled energy into your below-the-surface (sub dermal) areas, targeting fat cells in particular. The advantages of these non surgical non invasive treatments is that they're low impact, you won't experience much down time, minor discomfort occurs during treatment, yet you might successfully get rid of several pounds of back fat during your treatment sessions.

Back Fat Exercise That Burns Fat Yet Builds Fitness. Quick-fix cosmetic medical procedures are only one angle on how to lose back fat. You've got to deal the entire deck of cards and recognize that old fashioned diet and exercise not only work to reduce back fat, but this Dynamic Duo will launch your body into a future of invigorating good health, and free you up from the dragging anchor of excess body fat and sagging skin. What are some possibilities that are achievable?

* Low Impact Striding And Walking. You may not realize it but your body's natural cycles can be manipulated in order to trigger higher rates of back fat burning. Take for example the simple idea of doing a light 20-minute walk, at a low regular pace and without raising your heart rate significantly or even breaking a sweat. Current science suggests that for most people, this sort of low-key low stress walk-about primarily uses fat as your energy source. Reason? Your body naturally deletes its glycogen reserves while you sleep, in anticipation of a refueling breakfast. Back fat, arm fat, stomach fat all will start to trim, step by step.

* Creative Blends Of Yoga, Dance, Strength And Ballet For Burning Back Fat. Use it or lose it is motto with meaning. In the body-contouring world, exciting new hybrid exercise programs ha! ve emerg ed, such as Yoga Booty Ballet, for women and men. You'll get one element of yoga, another element of stretching, ballet moves to stretch and strengthen your body, strength poses to begin reinvesting muscle tone, meditation to regain mental focus, and some thigh-slapping great music to guide you into a shapelier body. Burn back fat? Absolutely. Women and men who've used Yoga Booty Ballet report losing 10 to 20 pounds or more, 10 to 18 inches off their waist stomach and hips.

Spinning Classes Make Vigorous Exercise Fun

Whether you?re out of shape or very fit, spinning classes can help you keep your New Year?s resolutions. You ride a stationary bicycle in a group, with a leader who tells you what to do and plays lively music to set the tempo. Many health clubs and gyms offer these classes, and I recommend them to all of my patients. Spinning relatively safe because it is done with a smooth rotary motion that does not involve the muscle damaging road shock of running.

The pedals drive a chain that is attached to a heavy flywheel that spins smoothly as you pedal. The amount of work you do is determined by the resistance on your pedals, not by how fast you spin. You perform a lot of work when you spin slowly against great resistance, and do not do much work when you spin very fast against very little resistance. A brake is attached to the flywheel and you regulate the resistance on the pedals by turning the brake clockwise to increase the resistance, and counter-clockwise to decrease resistance.

Before you start real training, you need to do some background work. Start out by pedaling at a very slow rate with no resistance. Stop when your legs start to feel heavy or hurt. You may be able to go ten minutes on the first day, five on the second, and perhaps not be able to exercise on the third. Persist and eventually every healthy person should be able to work up be able to work up to a full 45-minute class.

Your instructor will have you warm up by spinning without any resistance until you start to break a sweat. Then you will turn up the resistance a little and spin the pedals until your thigh muscles start to burn. Then pedal easily with little or no resistance until you have recovered, usually about a minute or two. You will continue to alternate ?into the burn? and ?out of the burn? until your leg muscles start to stiffen, which is a signal that you are through for the day.

You need to experiment to learn how high you have to turn up the resistance. If you turn it up too high, you wi! ll burn out your muscles and not be able to finish the class. If you don?t turn it up high enough, you will not achieve a high level of fitness, not feel sore the next day, and not gain the benefits of being in a high level of fitness. If you have worked out correctly, your thigh muscles will be sore on the next day. Then you have to pedal easily with little or no resistance for as many days as it takes for your muscles to feel fresh again. For most people, this will be one or two days. Then when your muscles are fresh again, you?re ready for another hard workout.

Herpes: Understanding If You Can Be Exposed

Herpes is one of those diseases that ?other people? get, right? Wrong. In fact, the sad truth is that many people will contract this disease without even realizing that they are at risk. Knowing what it is, what symptoms are, and how to seek out treatment is necessary. You need to understand, then, that anyone engaging in sex can be exposed to herpes.

Overview

First, you need to know what herpes is. There are two main forms that you are likely to come into contact with. The first type is oral herpes which effects the mouth and face. Then, there is genital herpes. There are two different viruses, HSV-1 and HSV-2 that cause these conditions. The viruses live on nerves. They live in the nerves but travel up to the skin or mucous membrane to duplicate. This is called shedding. Then, it travels back down into the nerve and can remain there, dormant for a period of time.

The sad fact is that about 20 percent of all individuals living in the United States have HSV-2, which is the virus that causes genital herpes. But, HSV-1, the virus that causes oral herpes is present in upwards of 50-80 percent of adults! The sad part of this equation is that up to 90% of those who have herpes do not even know they have it.

It is spread from person to person. Oral herpes can be spread during kissing. Genital herpes is spread most often by vaginal sex and anal sex. But, it can be spread during oral sex as well. It is important to know, though, that herpes needs a living being to live off of. That means that you can not catch it from things others have touched.

Can You Prevent Genital Herpes?

So, if this many people can be carriers for the virus, how are you to protect yourself? This is no easy task but there are several things that you can do to help protect you from contracting genital herpes.

 Whenever you engage in sex of any type, make sure that you take precautions against all sexually transmitted diseases. The use of a c! ondom ca n help to reduce the likelihood of contracting the virus. But, this too is not a sure prevention of herpes. It is only useful to protect against herpes that is shedding in which the condom prevents contact with those areas.

 The best way to prevent against contacting herpes is by not engaging in sexual acts whenever there are active sores on the genitals. Also, you should not engage in oral sex if either partner has the virus. Likewise, you should not allow anyone with oral herpes to give you oral sex either. The oral virus can become the genital herpes virus in this case.

 Unfortunately, even this can be only partial coverage. The fact is that the viruses that cause herpes are contagious even when there are no visible signs of it. In this case, the only thing that can be done is to abstain from contact.

The Symptoms And What To Do

Knowing what the symptoms of the virus are will help you to take care of the problem if you should have it.

 The most obvious sign of herpes is the sores that you will get. A cluster of small blisters that are fluid filled will form. They will then break and cause painful sores. These sores crust over and heal eventually. This process is likely to take several days for its full course.

 A rash or small bumps is also an indication of an infection.

 Painful urination can happen.

 A fluid discharge from the vagina is also a sign of infection.

 Flu like symptoms can be present when individuals first get the virus. Swollen lymph glands in the groin and a fever can accompany the flu like symptoms.

 Prior to an outbreak, individuals may experience itching, burning or pain running up and down the leg.

 Sometimes, there are no symptoms at all.

If you have any of these symptoms or fear that you may have been exposed to the herpes virus, you should seek medical attention. Tell your ! doctor y our concerns. Antiviral drugs are often used to help those who have the virus. Unfortunately, there is no cure for the virus. Medications can make outbreaks less frequents and less painful, though. Zovirax, Famvir, and Valtrex are three commonly used drugs used to treat the virus. Seeking medical attention can help you to understand how you will live with the condition.

Body Odor

All people smell when they don't bathe often enough. Sweat doesn't smell when it first reaches your skin. The odor comes only after bacteria or fungi on the skin's surface break down the fat in sweat to form chemicals that smell. Most sweat glands produce sweat that contains no fat, but the sweat glands around the breasts, genitals and armpits produce sweat that contains fat. Most people prevent body odor by washing these areas frequently to reduce the number of bacteria on the skin's surface.

The vast majority of people can prevent body odor by 1)bathing frequently; 2)changing underwear and socks daily, because underclothes retain skin debris that bacteria break down to cause odors; 3)using deodorants that contain low levels of bacteria-killing metals such as aluminum, zinc or zirconium; and 4)using powder under the armpits and groin to keep the skin dry, which prevents bacteria from growing. Bacteria grow rapidly on wet skin.

If you do all of these things and still have an odor, something is wrong. The most common cause of unusual body odor is a skin infection. An ammonia odor is caused by infection with Helicobacter, the bacteria that causes stomach ulcers, or by eating too much protein. Ask your doctor to draw a blood test for helicobacter. If it is positive, you can be cured with antibiotics. If it is negative, you may need to eat less meat, fish, chicken and dairy products. When you take in more protein than your body can use immediately, your body strips ammonia from protein to make you smell like ammonia.

A fish odor is caused by taking choline supplements, by a hereditary condition called trimethylaminuria that requires avoiding fish and other dietary sources of choline, or by a vaginal infection caused by a bacteria called Gardnerella. People who have damaged livers can also develop body odor that smells like fish. Damage to the liver can destroy the chemical that breaks down choline. Check with your doctor.

Should Case Managers Approve VNS (Vagal Nerve Stimulation) Therapy For Major Depression?

Currently, case managers see three major treatments for major depressive disorders. These include anti-depressant medication, cognitive behavioral or interpersonal psychotherapy, and electro-convulsive therapy. Electro-convulsive therapy is usually reserved for treatment resistant episodes of depression or when a rapid response due to urgent clinical signs or symptoms is necessary.

Vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) is a new proposed procedure for treating resistant depression. In VNS, a therapy pulse generator and lead are surgically implanted and external programming is used to change the stimulation setting.

But is this treatment supported by research as a medical necessity? A review of existing literature gives us an answer.

In July 2005, the FDA approved VNS as an ?adjunctive long-term treatment? for chronic or recurrent depression in patients 18 years of age or older experiencing a major depressive episode who have not had an adequate response to four or more adequate anti-depressant medications.

While VNS has had some review in the literature, it is important to note that most of these studies were sponsored by Cyberonics, the manufacturer of the VNS device.

Rush et al, published a randomized clinical trial to establish the efficacy of VNS. The trial had a 10 week component, where subjects were randomized, controlled and masked. There was a two week single blind recovery period and then 10 weeks of masked active or sham VNS. Medications were kept stable during the treatment. Results were scored from the Hamilton rating scale for depression. The primary outcome measures showed that the response rates were 15.2 percent for active treaters and 10 percent for the sham group in this study. Notably, the authors conclude that this study did not yield definitive evidence of short-term efficacy for adjunctive VNS in treating therapy resistant depression.

Sackheim et al, 2001, clinically studied VNS in cognition,. This study was to show whether VNS had an effect on cognitiv! e perfor mance in patients with treatment resistant depression. The study concluded that VNS stimulation in treatment resistant depression may result in enhanced neurocognitive functioning among patients who show clinical improvement. Controlled studies were recommended to rule out other contributing factors.

George et al, 2005, conducted a clinical trial to understand the effects of VNS on long-term outcomes in patients with major depressive disorders. This study showed that VNS plus treatment as usual, was associated with greater anti-depressant benefit over a 12 month period.

Still the safety and efficacy of VNS has not been established. There are no randomized controlled studies demonstrating efficacy for the patient. The non-randomized efficacy analysis is riddled with the potential for bias. The FDA statistical review repeatedly called Cyberonics? analysis ?questionable,? and concluded that it was not clear that efficacy had been established. The FDA Advisory Committee members agreed that a safety-benefit ratio could not be established with the data available. The FDA has raised questions about increased suicides, worsening depression, and sudden death, all of which deserve further investigation. The FDA issued a non-approvable letter to Cyberonics in August 2004, but, in a highly unusual reversal of position, the FDA issued an approvable letter in February 2005.

Case managers should be aware that there is no pertinent clinical data available from well-conducted randomized controlled or cohort trials in the prevailing peer-reviewed published medical literature adequately concluding that VNS therapy is safe and effective for the treatment of therapy resistant depression. Based on the current studies, case managers should deny claims for VNS treatment for depression to their health plan subscribers because this treatment has not been proven to be medically necessary.

Walking to Lose Weight

Introduction:

Walking at a continuous pace not only boost your energy level, but also reduces your weight. Walking should be aimed at particular distance or duration covered to maintain the proper health and control weight.

Walking is one of the best exercises to control weight and to burn excess calories if good methods of walking are practiced.

Walking styles:

It is always necessary to maintain good walking style to get the maximum benefits of this exercise and at the same time minimizing any health risk. The following walking styles should be maintained for obtaining the benefits.

?Try to be as straight as possible including back while walking.

?Your arms should be swing in front and back straight at a maximum angle of 90 degree centigrade with the body.

?Take more steps per minute instead of taking longer steps.

?Walking should be maintained in a straight line as possible and try to keep your foot very close.

?Try to breath deeply.

?You should start walking slowly in initial days and should increase the speed and miles gradually as you proceed, keeping in mind your body?s response to these exercises.

Losing weight and fitness level:

Being overweight can cause a decreased level of fitness. Burning extra calories by walking will not only make you slim and trim but also increase your overall fitness level. A lack in exercise always tries the decrease in efficiency of muscle and energy levels.

Trainer?s advice for Walking:

Heart rate is one of the factors for burning calories and thus controls weight loss. Higher the heart rate, higher calories will be burn and thus walking will be more effective for you, but at the same time you should also consult to an expert trainer, physiotherapist or physician for maintaining a specific heart rate. Ageing may cause some reduction in efficiency and pump ability of heart and a 20 years young male can achieve a maximum heart rate of 200 beats per minute and the same person at the ag! e of 40 may achieve a maximum heart rate of 180 only. Your trainer may advice you to attain not more than 60 % of the maximum heart rate, if you observe any difficulty you should consult to the trainer or the physician.

Program for Walking:

Make a simple program for walking.

?Start with a few minutes in initial days and gradually increase the duration.

?For achieving effective results of the walking you should continue walking for a minimum of 30 minutes daily or at least 5 to 6 days of a week.

?If your conditions allow you to walk briskly, walk as much as you can. In case you observe any symptoms of breathlessness, vomiting, dizziness or any unusual symptoms, you should contact to your doctor.

?Before walking do exercise for stretching of the body parts such as arms, head, shoulder, ankles, stomach, back etc, for a few minutes.

?If you get tired during walking, you should gradually slow down your speed.

?Too much of brisk walk can cause breathlessness in some of the people.

?You should adhere to your walking schedule daily and try to convert your walk in three time zones, first slow walking for 4-5 minutes, second brisk walking and third slow walking for 4-5 minutes.

?The first and third time zones are for warm up and clod down zones. Brisk walking should be gradually increased from 405 minutes in initial week to 25-30 minutes after 8-10 weeks.

Weight Loss by Treadmill

Weight loss using a good Treadmill workout program has worked for many people - and it can work for you too.

Treadmills can be used by virtually any age group, and by individuals of any activity level. Treadmills can help you lose weight, and maintain your weight loss.

It really is a numbers game. The more time you spend doing cardiovascular exercises the more calories you are going to burn and the more weight you will lose. And if you are looking for fitness equipment that will get the maximum burn, then a treadmill should be at the top of your list.

The treadmill is unsurpassed for a cardiovascular workout. According to a study done by the Medical College of Wisconsin and the VA Medical Center in Milwaukee, calories burned on the treadmill for 60 minutes averaged 865 - 705. This compares to:

Stair machine 746 - 637

Rowing machine 739 - 606

Stationary cycle 604 - 556

Cross-country ski machine 678 - 595

?This is one of numerous studies, that rank a treadmill as the number one cardiovascular machine.

Here are a few steps you can take to develop your own weight loss treadmill program:

Find ways to make your Treadmill session enjoyable, by listening to music, books on tape, or teaching tapes. Or, some people prefer to just enjoy nature and life around them, and the time to think, pray, or just let their mind wander. The more you enjoy your Treadmill workout, the more likely you are to workout consistently.

Make it a DAILY habit - just like brushing your teeth. Working out on your Treadmill daily makes your weight loss ambitions much more likely to succeed than if you are working out two to three days a week. And, most people that make the switch will tell you that it's easier to workout every day. You don't have to think about whether it's a workout day or not and get geared up for it - you just do it every day and your body gets used to it. It soon becomes a normal part of your day and you begin to look forward to it.

Incorporate ! interval s into three or four of your Treadmill sessions each week. Intervals are brief periods (about one minute) of more intense exercise mixed into your Treadmill sessions. For example, you would do a one minute interval of faster walking about every five minutes throughout your exercise session.

Here's how it will look; you'll start with your normal three to five minute warm-up and then five minutes into your walk you do your first interval, one minute of faster walking (or perhaps jogging). At the end of that minute you should be winded and ready to slow down. You'll slow down to your normal walking speed for the next four minutes and then your fifth minute is another one minute interval. This pattern continues throughout your exercise session.

Intervals increase your aerobic fitness level by pushing the envelope. While doing your interval you cross the anaerobic threshold into anaerobic metabolism, forcing your body to become conditioned to more intense exercise and making it a better weight loss program.

Intervals increase your basal metabolic rate (BMR), causing you to burn more calories 24 hours-a-day, and intervals can make your exercise less monotonous and help the time pass more quickly.

If you're not weight training, walk on your Treadmill with light (one to two pound) hand weights two to three days per week. Swing your arms and also use a variety of arm movements while walking to tone your upper body muscles and further increase your basal metabolic rate.

If at all possible, do your Treadmill workout first thing in the morning. Over 90% of people who workout consistently, do so first thing in the morning. If YOU want to exercise consistently, odds are in your favor if you hop to it early.

Make one day a week your easy day. Make this a very leisurely workout. Appreciate how good your walks are starting to feel as you lose weight and tone your muscles.

Keep a record of your workout. There's something very motivating about seeing your workout accomplishments an! d paper. Record the date and time-of-day of your workout, and the distance and/or time you walked. Keep a running total of the miles or minutes you've walked. Also, record your thoughts or feelings for that particular workout.

By taking these steps you're making this time each day a special time to take care of yourself. Make that a priority in your life and don't let anyone or anything keep you from that time. Working out on your Treadmill every day will help you achieve your weight loss goals and have a positive impact on all aspects of your life, including fitness level!

?

So, from the simple perspective of weight loss, the treadmill is by far the best exercise machine given its significantly associated energy expenditure. Treadmills have consistently provided quality results and lasting benefits. Treadmills allow you to work at your own pace, but don't allow you to slack off. You'll be able to burn calories effectively and reach your weight loss goals. It's that simple.

Children Protection from Skin Cancers

Skin cancer is the highest incident malignant disease with over 1 million new cases annually. This malignancies develop in the epidermis, dermis, or other structures of the skin and most often are caused by overexposure to both natural and artificial sources of ultraviolet light.

Unfortunately, anyone can get skin cancer, but factors such as skin pigmentation, eye color, freckling tendency and family history may increase one's risk of developing this disease.

A critical variable with a dramatic influence on skin cancer risk is excessive sun exposure in childhood, whether is intense, sporadic sun exposure (sunburn) or chronic sun exposure (tanning). Due to environmental changes, excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation is a growing health concern for children. The ozone layer exhaustion has resulted in loss of planetary sunscreen in charge with reflecting and absorbing ultraviolet radiation. This situation increased levels of ultraviolet radiation falling on the Earth.

Protecting children from sun overexposure should be the goal of all parents. This protection doesn't mean complete avoidance of sun light. We refer to specific situations varying from short time exposure to very intense sunlight to long time exposure to a normal sunlight intensity.

Children sun-protection do not require very complicate actions or procedures. It only means to avoid artificial and natural ultraviolet light sources by proper use of sunscreens, shade or sun-protection gear. According to ultraviolet intensity levels the sun precautions or actions include sunglasses, sunscreens, physical protection (hats, umbrellas) and sun avoidance in case of very high intensity.

Heart Rate Monitors

Heart rate monitors gained popularity in the mid-90s when people found them useful to monitor the heart rate while training and doing workouts. Over the years, they became standard on many exercise machines including elliptical trainers, treadmills and stationery bikes. If you workout often, training with a heart rate monitor is one of the most important things that you should do.

There are several types of heart rate monitors that you can choose from. The most common are the heart rate monitor watches and the strapless heart rate monitors.

Heart rate monitor watches are lightweight watches that can be used by anyone who wishes to lose weight, increase cardio training levels and reach fitness goals. You can choose from designs based on your needs and you can wear them as watches, since they have clocks built into them. If you wish to monitor your heart rate, you wear the chest strap, which is a sensitive piece of equipment that actually registers the heartbeats and transmits the rate to the receiver in the watch.

Meanwhile, the strapless heart rates monitors work without the need to use a chest strap. With these, you can obtain accurate ECG heart rate reading that measures the electrical stimulation of the heart. They only require you to put two fingers on the sensors between four and 12 seconds, to get a reading.

Heart rate monitors are indeed great tools to use for workout and training. If you go jogging, exercise and go to the gym regularly, the heart rate monitor watches are recommended for you. However, if you just need a heart rate monitor for casual monitoring, the strapless heart rate monitor is ideal.

How To Get Mobile Again With Light Weight Wheelchairs

Its really frustrating to for people when they are restricted to do things that they are already used to. What's more its more frustrating to feel when you have to be dependent on other people.

What's more is really unavoidable to feel depressed about being helpless and weak. These are some of the emotions that the people feel when they are having a life confined in a wheelchair.

However, all their worries are set free and they can live a normal life again. By using a light weight wheelchair, they are encouraged to lead a new life ahead. Now, they can join different activities they want. They can go to places they want to go. They can have the kind of independence they desire.

There are many benefits of lightweight wheelchair over a traditional manual chair. One of which of course is its ability to be operated by using a battery. In this way, the person using the wheelchair is able to move on his or her choice without exerting too much tiring effort. Another is that it is very useful for the patient who is still lacking strength to move the wheelchair using his or her own arm.

Because it is battery operated, it improves the patient's mobility and it's made as a more specialized chair. Wheelchairs can now be modified in many different applications. The lightweight wheelchairs also give a user the freedom even with a small quantity of effort.

Manual wheelchair can be sometimes awkward because of the weight. Luckily, lightweight wheelchairs are already out in the market which can help satisfy the needs of the users. Most of this kind of wheelchair are coded as K0004 (a Medicare code) which lessens the cost as compared to a regular manual wheelchair.

When it comes to the price, lightweight wheelchairs are very inexpensive. When deciding to buy a lightweight wheelchair, you should try to consider its functionality. If necessary, try to look for the accessories accompanied with the purchase that could be a great help for the user's needs.

In addition, there are als! o some t hings that one should consider before buying a lightweight wheelchair. Here some of those things:

?Most of the lightweight wheelchair weighs 29 to 33 pounds. This is appropriate for moving and for daily use.

?Most lightweights have changeable back heights, flip-back armrest, seats and quick-release functionality.

?Choose a wheelchair with a changeable tire. Do not go for a wheelchair that requires the entire wheel unit to be changed.

?If the wheelchair has already flip-back arms, you will not need a wheelchair with removable arms anymore. Flip-backs will be enough and can already satisfy the user's needs. ?If you are planning to buy a seat pillow, it can be a factor in adding the height of the user's seating position.

?A strong frame, arm rests, leg rest and a good brake are some of the important features which you should look for when buying a wheelchair.

Use these pointers and you are assured of the best quality lightweight wheelchair available in the market. Lastly, it is important that you also consider the needs of the person who will use it. Make sure that he or she will be comfortable in using it. And let the person realize that it is not a sign of his being disabled. Instead, let the person know that the wheelchair is the tool for him or her to start a new life and be strong again.

Curative Powers of Earth

Earth was used extensively for remedial purposes in ancient times as well as the middle ages. In modern times, it again came into prominence as a valuable therapeutic agent in the last century through the indefatigable efforts of Emanuel Felke, a German-born Lutheran minister who was nicknamed the Clay Pastor.

Felke found that the forces of earth have remarkable effects upon the human body, especially during the night. These effects are described as refreshing, invigorating and vitalising. Felke believed that for wounds and skin diseases, application of clay or moistened earth was the only true natural bondage. The body is thus repaired with the element from which it is assumed to be made.

Adolf Just ( 1838 - 1936), one of the pioneers of nature cure in modern times, believed that all diseases, but especially the serious nervous troubles of our age, would lose their terrors, if only sleeping or lying on the earth at night became customary in the curing of diseases. According to him, by sleeping on the ground, the entire body is aroused from its lethargy to a new manifestation of vital energy, so that it can now effectively remove old morbid matter and masses of old faces from the intestines, and receive a sensation of new health, new life and new unthought -of vigour and strength.

Going barefooted all day long, except when it is very cold, is also regarded as a valuable step towards achieving good health and true happiness. Men can draw vital energy and strength out of the earth through their feet. Jesus Christ also attached a great deal of importance to the practice of going barefooted. He himself was barefooted and commanded his disciples likewise.

It is advisable to go entirely barefooted as often as possible, especially on the bare ground but in rooms with painted floors it is better to wear chappals, since the painted floor affects the body adversely if one walks on it with bare soles.

The American Indians lay great stress on earth treatment. They believe that healin! g power is strong in leaves and herbs, powerful in the air, but very powerful indeed in the earth. They have a custom to bury sufferers from all kinds of disease in the earth upto their necks, leave them there for some hours, and then remove them. They believe that many of them are cured. Presumably the body draws unto itself the healing minerals and some of the earth?s magnetism.

Cure Heart Burn Naturally

It is possible to cure heart burn naturally or relieve the symptoms of heart burn. There are natural cures for heart burn that have been handed down from generation to generation. There are natural cures for heart burn originating from the native people of the Americas, Africa, Asia and Europe, as well. Practically everyone has experienced occasional heartburn. Chronic heartburn may be caused by how much or what foods a person chooses to eat, what he or she chooses to drink and other lifestyle issues, but it can also be a symptom of more serious medical conditions. If you watch what you eat, when you eat and what you drink, but you still experience heartburn once or more per week, you should have your symptoms evaluated by a physician.

In order to cure heart burn naturally, you may need to add a few items to your pantry. Fennel tea is one of the natural cures for heart burn. Fennel seeds are available at most grocery stores and can be ordered online from companies that sell herbs and other natural products. A tea is created by seeping one or two teaspoons of seeds in eight ounces of boiling water. Gingerroot and/or rhubarb may cure heart burn naturally. Chewing on a small piece of either may relieve the symptoms. Gingerroot is available at many grocery stores. Rhubarb grows wild, can be purchased (when in season) at some grocery stores and can be grown in your own garden. Rhubarb stalks reach maturity in early summer or late spring and can be frozen in chunks for later use. These natural cures for heart burn may neutralize the stomach acid that causes the burning sensation or saliva produced by the chewing action may neutralize the acid. Saliva in the mouth and throat naturally neutralizes stomach acid. Smoking, which dries out the mouth and throat may worsen or bring on symptoms of heart burn.

If you have an herb garden, be sure to include peppermint. You can cure heart burn naturally by chewing on the washed leaves or adding a pinch to your fennel tea. Peppermint oil is! one of the well known cures for heart burn and indigestion. It is an ingredient in many over the counter products sold for relief of heartburn and gas. Other mints may work as well.

None of the previously mentioned natural cures for heart burn carry any risks unless you have allergies. If you have allergies, you should check with your allergist before using a natural product that you have not used before. Natural does not always mean safe. Some herbal remedies said to cure heart burn naturally may cause serious side effects and should be used with care and caution. Pregnant women should not use products that contain slippery elm and should always consult there doctor before using anything to treat heartburn that is not a common food product. Heartburn is fairly common during pregnancy because of the extra pressure on the stomach. Chewing on a chunk of rhubarb should help.

Aerobics Imposters

In health clubs, they run classes that call themselves aerobics. As you will come to see, they are neither aerobic, nor are they the best way to lose the excess fat. The main thing they accomplish for you is losing weight from your wallet.

True Aerobics

The word aerobic literally means with air. It is the opposite of anaerobic (without air). These terms refer to the way in which your cells are providing the energy for your muscles to work. Anaerobic means sugars are being burned without oxygen, which creates a by-product of lactic acid. This lactic acid accumulates in your muscles, causing them to feel like they're burning. Aerobic means that blood sugar and fat are being burned in oxygen, which has only carbon dioxide as a by-product, which you exhale. Low intensity exercise is aerobic because you can inhale enough oxygen to meet your muscles' energy needs. High intensity exercise needs far more energy, but you can't breathe in enough air to keep up, so you feel out of breath. But your muscles still need the energy, so they switch to anaerobic. However, you can't burn fat in anaerobic mode, only sugars, so you can't keep it up too long, and you're not accomplishing your goal of fat-reduction.

Whatever activity you choose, you know you're in an aerobic mode if you can take deep breaths and carry on a conversation. If you're taking fast, shallow breaths through your mouth, then no matter how slow you may be going or what kind of activity it is, you're doing it anaerobically. Does that mean that walking to the store is aerobic activity? Yes. Most things you do all day are aerobic. For it to be exercise, though, you have to raise your heart rate. So, get the blood flowing by walking fast, and you'll be burning fat in no time.

For aerobic exercise to be effective, it has to be long duration. When you start to move around, your body will burn blood-sugar in oxygen aerobically, but it won't trigger your fat cells to provide any fat to burn right away. Your body would prefer to wait f! or your next meal to replace the blood sugar. It's only when you show your body that it will need more energy right away that it will recruit fat from your fat stores. Once the fat starts to flow, you have to burn it, or else it will be re-deposited unused. So what does that mean? When you do a low-intensity exercise, it will really do you no good until you pass the 15-20 minute mark. Until then, you are just burning blood-sugar. Once the fat starts to flow, that's when the work really begins, and you should continue exercising and burning that fat for at least 20 more minutes if you continue your low-intensity activity. If you switch to a higher-intensity activity, try to breathe as deeply as possible to continue your aerobic burning.

Use Your Biggest Weapons

If your goal is fat-reduction and you want to achieve it as quickly as possible, you must use your biggest weapons. Larger muscles burn more energy than smaller muscles. Therefore, your choice of exercise should make use of your largest muscles, which are your gluteus maximus and your quadriceps... your butt and your thighs. Walking, jogging, stair climbing, cross country skiing, rollerblading and bicycling are all great examples of activities you can keep up for a long period of time, while breathing deeply and using your largest muscles. Swimming, unfortunately, is mostly an upper-body activity, no matter how hard you think you're kicking.

The arm movements that you see some power-walkers doing, as well as the complicated patterns in aerobics classes at the gym are doing nothing to speed up weight loss. Arm swinging can improve your circulation and keep your mind occupied, but is not necessary, and certainly is no substitute for a good leg workout.

High Intensity Usefulness

High intensity exercise has it's good points, though. It is important to remember that a well-conditioned heart and lungs can fight heart disease and stroke, and makes all forms of exercise more effective. The only way to improve the function of your hear! t and lu ngs is to push them harder than normal, into the anaerobic side of things. When you're struggling for breath, breathing rapidly, and your heart is pumping at its maximum, you are making them more powerful and prolonging your life. Although anaerobic exercise does not burn fat while you're doing it, the exercise itself raises your metabolism so that you burn fat afterward for several hours. This is because your body is replacing all the energy you used. My other recommendations can be found in my article on Exercise.

Those high-intensity classes offered by health clubs are good for some people, but there's no good reason for you to join one if you've never done it before. For some people, it makes the workout fun, which is a great motivator. The coach or instructor is also a great source of motivation because they encourage you to continue and push harder. Many people need that. Just remember that it is NOT aerobic exercise. The complicated patterns and arm movements serve no purpose, and if you can't keep up for more than 20 minutes, it may be a waste of time. For most men (and women) it is far better to do a nice low-intensity warm up for 20 minutes, followed by a moderate to high intensity run or bike for another 10-15 minutes. To get the best aerobic benefits, try to breathe deeply throughout, because that's what aerobics is really about!

Aerobics is good, but there are better exercises for weight loss, read my article called Exercise: Essential.

Aerobic exercise can be a part of your weight-loss equation. But the most important part you can't find in a gym, learn more on my site.

Cosmetic Dentistry An Overview

Teeth Whitening

Generally speaking, teeth whitening/bleaching can be achieved in a variety of ways. It is used to correct discoloration of he teeth and a number of techniques can be used for this procedure including: chemical whitening, mild acid whitening, abrasive teeth brightening and the newest technique, laser teeth whitening. A basic teeth whitening procedure can be done in the surgery or at home, with the patient being given materials and instructions to complete the procedure themselves. Either way, you will find good results from both in surgery and at home techniques.

Bonding

If your teeth are cracked, chipped, broken and showing signs of staining, then bonding (resin fillings) is a very good procedure to consider. With bonding, tooth colored materials are bonded to the tooth surface. It does a similar thing to porcelain veneers but is cheaper and does not take as long. However, resin is not as strong as porcelain and requires repairs within a few years. Also, over time, resin can discolor.

Enamel Shaping

This process normally combined with bonding involves modifying teeth by removing or contouring enamel. This is a very quick procedure and has immediate effects.

Veneers

Veneers are like custom made shells that are used to cover the front side of the tooth. They are made from tooth colored materials in most cases porcelain and are used on chipped, worn, permanently stained, poorly shaped or crooked teeth. The dentist uses a wafer like piece of porcelain that is placed over the tooth for repair as well as cosmetic appearance. If you are after the look of that Hollywood smile then veneers are what you need. They are expensive though and a full procedure will cost many thousands of dollars.

Tooth Shaping

In this procedure, a small amount of the enamel on the tooth is removed. Tooth shaping can shorten and round off teeth, creating a nice even contour. The procedure is very quick and painless, being done within half an hour. The cost can be u! pwards o f $100 per tooth.

Braces

Braces are used not only on children, but adults as well. They are used to straighten crooked and crowded teeth and also if your teeth do not meet properly. You will be referred to an orthodontist for this type of procedure.

Gum Lifts

This procedure involves the removal of gum to make teeth appear longer and to make the gum line appear more even. The dentist will numb the region and remove the excess gum.

Importance of Body Care and Diet in Ayurveda

Ayurvedic contains the detail instructions about body care and personal hygiene. Chewing of various spices and nuts is recommended for the clarity of voices, a pleasing taste, and fresh smells in the mouth, gargling with sesame oil be said to enhance the strength of the jaws. Sesames oil also gives depth to the voice and even results in the face becoming plump. Regularly oiling of the hair and the ears, and the periodic oil massages are a part of the normal recommended body care. Massage makes the physique smooth, strong, and charming, and prevents the onslaught of age. Scents and garlands of flowers are said to spread fragrance in the body, and enhance longevity and charm.

An India psychiatrist was surprised to find the following description of a tongue scraper, the like of which he had not seen in use in any other country.

Tongue scrapers which, should be curved and sharp edge, are to be made of metals like gold, silver, copper, tin and brass. The dirt deposited at the root of the tongue obstructs expiration and give rise to a foul smell: so the tongue should be scraped regularly.

Where as the diet is concerned, ayurveda provides the general description of food that promotes health and other, which should be avoided. It say that the food that should be allowed to the patients accordingly to the nature of the malady, and those which should be banned. Some medicines are to be taken with certain specific foods such as buttermilk. Certain drugs and formulations are administered to the patient in conjunction with certain food, falling which; the drugs do not have any curative effect.

Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food is discussed in ayurveda. Non-vegetarian diets are particularly recommended in diseases like consumption where the wasting of flesh is evident.

The emphasis that ayurveda lays on diet of the patient is apparent from the old dictum: ?The patient does not require any medicine if he has the wholesome diet and he does not require any medicine either, if he is ! not on a wholesome diet.? If a person?s diet is wholesome, he will not need any medicine because he will not fall ill and if the diet is faulty, he will not require a medicine because it will not help him without proper diet. So the conclusion of this is that one must have proper diet.

What is Mindfulness?

The term sounds easy enough to comprehend, but there is a much deeper meaning. Terms like mindfulness and loving-kindness seem obvious, but you have to understand them before you can implement them, into your daily life.

This reminds me of a conversation I, recently, had with a friend. He was reading the personal ads, in the singles section, and came across another term: ?consciously aware.? He was grasping to understand why so many women had listed this as a prerequisite to any kind of relationship, with a male companion.

When he mentioned this to me, and I could see the puzzlement all over his face, I couldn?t suppress a smile. I asked him, ?Are you a good listener?? Now, he was completely ?thrown off the track.?

So, I explained that women, who had been exposed to men, who didn?t listen, had written these advertisements. Living in the moment, and being consciously aware, are components of mindfulness.

Therefore, let?s take an in-depth look at the meaning of mindfulness. Staying in the present moment is, probably, the hardest part, for most of us. We spend so much time thinking about the past and future, that there is little time to see life, as it is.

Imagine, what would happen, if you drove a car like that. Looking over your shoulder, and blocks ahead, most of the time, would get you into an accident. Due to the fact, you were not aware of what is right in front of you. So what do you do?

Let?s take the first step together today. Firstly, make a commitment to create the daily habit of mindfulness. After that, start to listen to the world around you and the world within you. The universe is outside, and within, at the same time. This is proven by the fact that the universe is infinitely vast and infinitely small.

Now, back to listening to yourself. Make it a point to notice how often you are nervous, tense, or distracted, and learn to focus on your breath. Breath awareness will calm your inner being, and you can do it anytime. If you want to! learn m ore about breathing for your overall health, you should attend a workshop or a Yoga class.

Learn to be silent and learn to speak up at the ?right time.? When is there a right time to speak? Learn to relax before talking. Never speak to inflame a conflict, but do not become silent when you can resolve a conflict. Never be afraid to compromise, and find common ground, with a perceived opponent.

Always remember: The solutions to your problems are all within your own mind.
